Some YouTubers seem to get EVERYTHING for free, from toothpaste to eyeliner to cars. They get so much PR mail that they’ve turned it into an actual video genre, PR Mail Unboxings. SO not fair, right? How’s an influencer supposed to get in on that freebie action?

CREATE A MEDIA KIT
Think of your media kit as your social media resume. You’re showing off your best attributes and outlining all of your accomplishments, and showing the brand how extensive your influence on social media is. This can be a PDF document, website, or even a link to a Google Doc.

What to include:

    · Statistics – How many unique page views your blog gets each month, how many views your YouTube videos have gotten, how many followers you have on each channel. Bear in mind that it’s REALLY easy for companies to do a little research and find out if you’re lying about your stats, so be honest.

    · Content Samples – These should be the best examples of your work. What are your most popular posts? Include a variety of examples that showcase your unique style, your photography & videography skills.

CREATE A PITCH/ASK LETTER TEMPLATE
Simply tagging a brand on Twitter with a, “Hey, gimme free stuff,” isn’t gonna do anything but make you look greedy and unprofessional. You’d be surprised how many typo-ridden emails and DMs brands get, too. Just…. Don’t.

Draft a template that you can customize to individual brands, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time and effort. Your pitch letter should be short, to-the-point, and include:

    · An introduction to your channels (WITH LINKS) & personal brand,
    · A link or attachment of your media kit,
    · A quick rundown of your social media stats (followers, page views, etc)
    · How your channel’s audience and aesthetic aligns with the brand’s,
    · Why you love their products,
    · Which products you would like to try,
    · What you can/will do for the brand in return for featuring their product(s),
    · Your ideas for potential giveaways, contests, etc to encourage subscriber engagement
    · Your contact information, including mailing address
    · A polite thank-you for their time and consideration

At first, you may send out dozens or hundreds of pitch letters without a single response. Remember: Brands get hundreds, if not thousands, of pitches a day. Keep at it!
