Social Media Marketing

Creating and Strengthening Your Personal Brand

In every niche on social media (beauty, gaming, cooking, parenting, etc), there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of folks creating content. Standing out and creating & maintaining your personal brand is KEY to succeeding in your content vertical. How do you do that? Read on!

CHOOSE A SUB-NICHE
So you’re a beauty vlogger. What do you specialize in? Drugstore beauty dupes for expensive products? Costume/cosplay makeup tutorials? Full beat makeup with cut creases, contouring, and winged eyeliner? Everyday looks for busy guys & gals? Find the thing that makes your channel unique, and play it up.

You don’t want to do just ONE kind of video, of course, but having a good chunk of your content be niche-specific, with appropriate video tags and hashtags, helps attract users who are looking for that specific kind of content. Track your likes, comments, and views to see what your subscribers are responding to the most.

WHO ARE YOU?
Sit down with pen and paper, and write down words that you think describe you. Ask friends to do the same for you. Collate the answers and see what traits or words come up again and again, and use those to help you focus your content and brand.

BRAND YOUR PROFILES
Choosing a username is tough. It needs to be unique, catchy, not already taken (SO HARD), and reinforce your brand. Coming up with a username and tagline, then reserving that username and domain name on all channels, is key.

TRACK YOUR MENTIONS
We’ve talked about subscriber engagement, but it bears repeating here: Your subscribers love it when you reply! Keep an eye on your @ mentions on all platforms, and try to respond to as many as you can within 24-48 hours.

SHARE OFTEN ON YOUR MOST-WATCHED CHANNELS
Where do you get the most traffic: YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat? Whichever 1 or 2 platforms garner you the most views, comments, and likes, make sure you’re posting or commenting there at least once or twice a day.

CREATE YOUR OWN VIDEO TAGS
Grav3yardGirl’s “Does This Thing Really Work?”. WhatWouldLizzyDo’s “Woop or Whomp”. Tati’s “OMG Tuesdays”. None of these series are super unique in and of themselves, but the creators came up with a fun, unique name for a common video genre and used it to stand apart from the rest.

VISUAL BRANDING
If you’re good at graphic design, create your own logo and header for your channels. If not, enlist a friend or consider hiring a professional designer – just as iconic brands like Coke and Target are instantly recognizable through their logos, so are influencers!

CROSS-PROMOTE YOUR PROFILES
Posted a video on YouTube? Tweet and Instagram it. Shared a super silly Snap? Ditto. Never pass up an opportunity to cross-promote your content across all of your channels – you never know which of your channels a subscriber might be looking at.

CONNECT WITH FELLOW INFLUENCERS
Don’t be selfish: Spread the love. Connect with creators in your niche, and do shared videos or challenges with them. Who knows – you might find your new BFF!
